Chief Underwriting Officer

A fast-growing, private-backed medical stop loss MGU in the Austin, TX area is seeking a Chief Underwriting Officer to join its leadership team. The organization is in a strong growth phase, with a focus on delivering stop loss solutions to self-funded employers and captive programs.

This is a hands-on leadership role with full ownership of the underwriting function, working closely with executive leadership to shape underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and overall portfolio performance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead underwriting across new and renewal medical stop loss business
• Establish and refine underwriting guidelines, pricing strategy, and risk selection
• Evaluate submissions and support structuring of complex risks
• Partner with executive leadership on business planning and growth initiatives
• Build underwriting processes and support team development over time
• Collaborate closely with broker and consultant partners

Required Experience:

• Deep medical stop loss underwriting experience (carrier, MGU, or reinsurance)
• Strong technical underwriting capabilities with a hands-on approach
• Experience with self-funded employer plans and stop loss program structures
• Proven ability to contribute to underwriting strategy and portfolio performance

Preferred Experience:

• Experience with captive programs
• Exposure to high-growth environments
• Strong knowledge of the stop loss broker/consultant landscape
