Laboratory Technician

The Roadway Repair & Maintenance (RRM) Asphalt Plant Laboratories provide quality control and quality assurance services for NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) asphalt plants and vendor-supplied materials. Laboratory activities include testing asphalt mixtures, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), aggregates, asphalt binder, and other raw materials; evaluating materials for compliance with NYC DOT specifications and ASTM standards; and supporting research, development, and implementation of sustainable paving technologies.
Under the direction of laboratory and supervisory staff, the Laboratory Technician performs laboratory and field testing to evaluate the quality, consistency, and performance of asphalt and related materials. Duties include sampling and testing materials, conducting quality-control and quality-assurance tests, accurately recording and analyzing test results, identifying and reporting deviations from specifications, and assisting with investigations of out-of-specification materials and production issues. The Technician also conducts field inspections and sampling, assists with research and testing of new and recycled paving materials and sustainable technologies, and supports the preparation of technical reports, testing records, and laboratory procedures.
The Laboratory Technician maintains laboratory equipment and facilities, follows established safety and quality-control procedures, and assists with special assignments, research projects, emergency testing, and production-related investigations. The position requires effective communication and coordination with asphalt plant personnel, laboratory and engineering staff, Quality Control personnel, contractors, vendors, and other NYC DOT personnel.

ASSISTANT TRANSPORTATION SPECI - 22306

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, planning or mathematics or one of the physical sciences; or
2. High school diploma or its educational equivalent and 4 years of full-time experience performing technical work on traffic programs and citywide transportation studies; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.
