Controls Engineer
Position Overview

The Controls Engineer is responsible for leading and supporting the technical execution of plant automation and control systems. This role provides hands-on support for electrical distribution systems, controls upgrades, equipment startups, automation documentation, and control system troubleshooting in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage strategic technical projects in a dynamic, high-volume manufacturing setting

Support new project implementation through configuration of control modules and HMI graphics

Drive continuous improvement of process control systems using Advanced Process Control, Alarm Management, and Operator Interface Optimization

Integrate and maintain PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and associated process control systems

Train end users on operation of newly installed or modified control systems

Standardize control system designs, logic, and documentation, including operating procedures and as-built drawings

Act as the primary plant liaison during system startups and commissioning with external contractors and system integrators, ensuring proper documentation transfer and training

Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot automation documentation such as schematics, functional descriptions, PLC programs, and SCADA systems

Diagnose and resolve automation and process control issues

Manage automation-related improvement initiatives

Mentor and train Instrumentation & Controls Technicians

Perform additional duties as assigned or required
Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in understanding, modifying, and upgrading PLC logic (Rockwell platforms preferred; Siemens experience is a plus)

Working knowledge of VFDs, industrial networks, and network switches

Ability to update P&IDs and electrical/mechanical drawings (AutoCAD preferred)

Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate and re-engineer operational processes

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams

Ability to assess training needs and support workforce development

Competency in interpreting engineering drawings, manuals, and blueprints

Comfortable working with ambiguity in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

Reliable attendance is essential

Must be able to read, write, and speak English
