About the Role
Our firm is seeking an experienced Engineer on behalf of a leading Fortune 500 retail organization that operates one of the largest and most complex inventory and fulfillment ecosystems in North America. This role supports a critical Enterprise Inventory platform responsible for enabling accurate inventory visibility, scalability, and operational efficiency across a large distributed environment.
The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong architectural thinking, helping shape application design, influence engineering best practices, and drive the development of highly scalable distributed systems. This is a hybrid opportunity requiring onsite attendance on Wednesdays and during designated core business weeks.

Job Description
As an Engineer supporting the Enterprise Inventory team, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and enhancing distributed applications and services that support large-scale inventory operations. You will help translate complex architectural concepts into practical software designs and collaborate closely with engineering teams to deliver robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
This position requires a hands-on technical leader who can contribute code while also influencing engineering direction through design reviews, mentoring, and operational best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop scalable, high-performance software solutions within a microservices architecture.
  • Translate application architecture into detailed technical designs and implementation plans.
  • Build new features and functionality for existing services.
  • Design and develop new services and APIs to support business initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain Kafka consumers and producers for large-scale event-driven systems.
  • Ensure software is highly testable and maintain strong automated test coverage.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide technical guidance to fellow engineers.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and support operational excellence through root cause analysis and preventive improvements.
  • Participate in team support rotations, including on-call responsibilities.
  • Contribute to deployment, change management, monitoring, and incident response processes.
  • Promote best practices for system reliability, observability, and performance.

Qualifications
Required
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Kotlin.
  • Experience developing applications using Spring Boot and/or Micronaut.
  • Expertise in designing and building highly scalable distributed systems.
  • Experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of microservices architecture and RESTful API development.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
  • Proven ability to translate architectural concepts into production-ready solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving and production support troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and software delivery best practices.
  • Knowledge of observability practices, including logging, monitoring, and metrics.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative Agile engineering environments.
Preferred
  • Experience supporting enterprise inventory, supply chain, or retail technology platforms.
  • Experience with cloud-native or cloud-ready application development.
  • Experience leading technical design discussions and mentoring engineers.
  • Familiarity with operational excellence practices, including change management and incident response.
  • Experience implementing resilience, fault tolerance, and performance optimization strategies in large-scale systems.
