Job Summary

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Designer to join our ALRE group located in Rancho Bernardo, CA.

Under close supervision with specific detailed instructions on routine tasks, this position is responsible for providing design solutions for structural products and components of products using computer-aided design (CAD) equipment and technical engineering software such as CREO and SolidWorks.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops design solutions for assigned structural products and components, including layouts, sketches, and blueprints.
  • Investigates design factors such as damage tolerance, durability, and structural modeling.
  • Details related structural assemblies, mechanisms, and devices.
  • Interacts with engineering staff on design concepts, progress, and issues.
  • Validates conformity to design standards and specifications, identifies design errors and other deficiencies, and recommends changes.
  • Prepares documentation and technical design presentations to engineering staff as required.
  • Remains current in CAD techniques and applicable engineering design software.
  • Works on assignments defined in terms of specific tasks, which are reviewed regularly for adequacy in meeting objectives.
  • Maintains regular intra-organizational contact and may have some customer contact.
  • Observes all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations when conducting business on behalf of the Company.
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires an Associates degree or a certificate from a recognized organization indicating completion of training in SolidWorks and CREO design software plus eight or more years of progressive experience utilizing CAD software. Additional education may be substituted in lieu of work experience.
  • Must have an understanding of engineering design concepts and principles and possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly, applying them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  • Must have some working knowledge of GD&T and ASME Y14.1, ASME Y14.2, ASME Y14.3, ASME Y14.5, and ASME Y14.34.
  • Must be able to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases.
  • Must also be able to determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of difficult problems.
  • Must have good communication, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, and excellent computer skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team and be able to work extended hours as required.
  • Must be customer focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
