Job description

About FLX Solutions

FLX Solutions, Inc. builds robotic systems that make inspection and maintenance faster, safer, and more repeatable, especially in tight, hard-to-reach spaces.

Our flagship platform, the FLX BOT, is a modular, handheld, snake-like articulating robotic system designed to solve one of the toughest challenges in maintenance: reaching the “last meter” in complex environments. It is already in use with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, a major DoD prime, and shipbuilders, with expanding applications across industrial, transit, and construction sectors.

The Opportunity

FLX Solutions is at a key inflection point. The FLX BOT technology is already proven, the market is responding, and we have a high-confidence pipeline of over $18M including an upcoming large pilot order from the Navy. This is just the beginning.

We are building the next generation of FLX BOT units for Air Force and Navy programs in our own Bethlehem lab, and we need a Junior Embedded Software Engineer who can write, test, and debug the firmware that runs them. Every FLX BOT link runs firmware on its own microcontroller, coordinated by an onboard computer and an operator screen.

This is a hands-on role with a strong bias toward doing on day one. You will write and flash firmware, run it on real hardware, and track down the bugs. We use AI coding tools across our engineering work, and you will too, with our Head of Robotics and part-time senior engineering mentors reviewing your work and teaching you along the way. As the company scales, there is a clear path to grow into owning more of the robot software.

If you want to flash a board in the morning and watch the robot move in the afternoon, this is your role. If you have written code that made real hardware do something, keep reading.

What You'll Do:

Firmware for the Robot:

  • Write, test, and debug C/C++ firmware for STM32 microcontrollers: motor control, sensors, power monitoring, and communication between links.
  • Bring up firmware on new boards with the electrical team, including our 48 V system, with a senior engineer reviewing every safety limit.
  • Use AI coding tools to draft code, then review, test, and fix it yourself.

Test and Release:

  • Help build automated tests and a repeatable build-and-flash process so every robot runs the same firmware.
  • Run long motor and system tests, log the data, and track down bugs.
  • Document how things work so the next person can pick it up.

Robot Software and Operator Interface:

  • Help move our robot software to ROS 2 on an NVIDIA Jetson and keep it running.
  • Help build the operator screen and camera feed that inspectors use, and the way inspection data is saved.

Grow with the Team:

  • Learn production firmware practices from our Head of Robotics and senior engineering mentors.
  • Take on more of the robot software as you build your track record.

Who You Are:

  • An early-career embedded engineer who likes writing code that makes hardware move, and learns fast.
  • Comfortable in a lab: you can read a schematic, use a multimeter and scope, and solder a wire.
  • Someone who understands the basics of electronics and microcontrollers, not just software.
  • Already using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar) in your work, with the judgment to tell when the AI is wrong.
  • A collaborative, curious engineer who asks for help early and works hard to get things right.
  • Excited about robotics, real hardware, and shipping systems that work outside the lab, including in demanding DoD and industrial environments.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a closely related field (completed, or completing within the next year).
  • 0 to 3 years of professional experience. Internships, co-ops, senior design, and serious personal or team projects count.
  • C or C++ on a microcontroller (STM32, Arduino, Teensy, ESP32, or similar).
  • Python and Git.
  • Basic understanding of serial communication (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, or USB).
  • Basic soldering and lab equipment skills.
  • Good documentation habits and clear written and verbal communication.
  • U.S. Citizenship (due to DoD requirements).

Preferred:

  • STM32 HAL, an RTOS, or bare-metal firmware experience.
  • Motor control experience (BLDC, encoders, current sensing).
  • ROS or ROS 2, Linux, or NVIDIA Jetson experience.
  • Test automation or CI experience.
  • Robotics club, competition team, or projects you can show us.
  • Prior experience in a startup or small hardware team.

Who You’ll Partner With:

  • Our Head of Robotics, day to day, on firmware and robot software. You will be his backup on both.
  • The CEO on product priorities and customer programs.
  • Senior engineering mentors who review your work and guide you each week.
  • The electrical and mechanical engineering team on bring-up, integration, and test.

Company Core Values:

  • Do what you say, say what you do.
  • We all make mistakes; it is what we do afterwards that defines us.
  • Treat all with respect. Period.
  • Leave a situation better than you found it.
  • Just because something has always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean it has to be done that way in the future.

Compensation & Location:

  • Salary: $70K - $110K Competitive for an early-stage company, with performance-based increases tied to company milestones and your expanding responsibilities.
  • Equity: A meaningful, early-stage equity grant. You will be a critical part of our success, and your compensation will reflect that.
  • Location: On-site in Bethlehem, PA, so you can work hands-on in the lab alongside the CEO and engineering team.
  • Travel: Occasional travel to customer sites, pilots, and partner offices.
  • Flexibility: Willing to adapt role and package for the right candidate.
