Job Description

Title: Mechanical Engineer
Location: San Jose, CA (Local)
Domain/Industry: Fuel&Cell Industry domain experience required

Position Summary
We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and validating mechanical enclosure systems that meet stringent environmental and safety standards. You will leverage your SolidWorks expertise to drive designs from concept through production, ensuring full compliance with NEMA 4X and IP63 ratings across product lines deployed in industrial, commercial, and outdoor environments.

Key Responsibilities
Enclosure Design & Development
Design mechanical enclosures, panels, and housings using SolidWorks 3D CAD, including complex assemblies, sheet metal components, and machined parts.
Develop detailed engineering drawings, GD&T annotations, and BOMs for manufacturing and procurement.
Lead design-for-manufacturability (DFM) reviews, coordinating with fabrication and supply chain teams.
Create and maintain SolidWorks PDM/PLM-managed design files, ensuring version control and document integrity.

NEMA & IP Rating Compliance
Engineer enclosures to satisfy NEMA 4X requirements, including corrosion resistance, dust exclusion, and protection against hose-directed water ingress.
Apply IEC 60529 standards to achieve IP63 ratings—protection against solid particulates (6) and water spray (3).
Specify appropriate materials, gaskets, seals, coatings, and hardware (e.g., 304/316 stainless steel, fiberglass, powder-coated carbon steel) to achieve target ratings.
Plan and support environmental qualification testing: IP ingress testing, salt-spray (ASTM B117), thermal cycling, and vibration.

Analysis & Validation
Conduct SolidWorks Simulation (FEA) for structural integrity, thermal analysis, and stress validation under operating and transport loads.
Perform tolerance stack-up analyses to ensure proper fit, form, and function of enclosure assemblies.
Work with third-party testing laboratories to execute NEMA and IEC certification programs; interpret test reports and drive design corrections.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with electrical engineers to coordinate PCB/component layout, thermal management, and cable management within enclosures.
Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and field teams to resolve production issues and support continuous improvement.
Provide technical guidance during customer reviews, FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), and field installation activities.

Documentation & Standards
Maintain engineering design history files (DHFs), change orders (ECOs/ECNs), and test records in compliance with ISO 9001 and internal quality systems.
Ensure designs adhere to applicable standards: UL 508A, NFPA 70 (NEC), CSA, CE marking, and RoHS as required.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor''s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
• 6+ years of hands-on experience designing industrial or commercial mechanical enclosures.
• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling, sheet metal, assemblies, drawings, SolidWorks Simulation).
• Demonstrated working knowledge of NEMA 4X enclosure standards and design requirements.
• Practical understanding of IEC 60529 IP-rating methodology, including IP63 design and test criteria.
• Proficiency in GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
• Experience selecting and specifying sealing systems, gaskets, and surface treatments for environmental protection.
• Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication, welding, casting, and machining processes.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with SolidWorks PDM/EPDM for drawing and revision management.
• Knowledge of UL 508A, UL 50E, or equivalent enclosure safety standards.
• Background in thermal management design for electronics enclosures (heat dissipation, airflow modeling).
• Exposure to ATEX / Class I Division 2 hazardous location enclosure design.
• Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) or Associate (CSWA) designation.
• Experience working within ISO 9001-certified quality management systems.
• Familiarity with FEA tools beyond SolidWorks Simulation (ANSYS, Abaqus) is a plus.
