About the Role
Our client, a leading national retail organization operating one of the largest e-commerce and enterprise technology platforms in the country, is seeking a mid-to-senior Backend Java Engineer to join their Email Security Platform team. This role centers on a Java/Spring Boot application responsible for ingesting, processing, scanning, and routing enterprise email for security analysis at scale.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced backend engineer who enjoys building scalable, distributed services and supporting mission-critical production systems within a high-volume retail technology environment. While the initial assignment is within an email security platform, prior email security experience is not required. Candidates with strong backend engineering experience in distributed systems will transition well into the role.

Job Description
As a Backend Java Engineer, you will design and maintain the services that power a secure, high-throughput email processing pipeline. You''ll work closely with technical and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, performant features while supporting the day-to-day health of production systems.
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Implement new features, enhancements, and defect fixes within distributed backend applications.
  • Build and maintain automated unit and integration tests.
  • Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions.
  • Support database schema updates and data migrations.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot production issues involving application behavior and data processing.
  • Partner with technical and business stakeholders to resolve application and pipeline issues.
  • Contribute to the ongoing reliability, scalability, and performance of backend services.
The ideal candidate is a strong backend engineer who can quickly become productive within an existing codebase, writes clean and maintainable code, and enjoys solving complex production issues. Success in this role is driven by solid Java engineering fundamentals, distributed systems experience, and the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of professional backend software development experience using Java.
  • Strong experience developing applications with the Spring Framework / Spring Boot.
  • Experience building and supporting distributed or event-driven applications, including messaging or event-streaming technologies such as Kafka.
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Strong understanding of automated testing, including unit and integration testing (e.g., JUnit).
  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL, including supporting schema changes or data migrations.
  • Experience working with cloud storage services such as Amazon S3.
  • Hands-on experience working in Agile development environments.
  • Experience with agentic coding tools and modern AI-assisted development practices (e.g., Claude Code, OpenCode).
  • Experience troubleshooting production applications and resolving complex technical issues.
  • Experience participating in code reviews and collaborative software design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cloud-native application development, particularly Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with additional messaging or event-streaming technologies such as Azure Event Hub, RabbitMQ, or JMS.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes (K8s).
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and search technologies such as Elasticsearch.
  • Familiarity with build tools such as Gradle.
  • Experience with observability frameworks such as OpenTelemetry (OTEL).
  • Experience integrating with the Microsoft Graph API.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience working in security-focused or highly available production environments.
  • Experience with email processing or messaging platforms, email security solutions, or knowledge of SMTP, MIME, or enterprise messaging concepts.
