Job Description

Monitoring Officer

North of England | Hybrid Working

We're working with a local authority looking to appoint a Monitoring Officer into a key leadership position.

This is one of those roles that sits at the heart of the organisation. You'll be advising elected members and senior officers, safeguarding decision-making, and helping the Council navigate an increasingly complex governance and regulatory environment.

The successful candidate will be the organisation's lead adviser on governance, constitutional matters, standards and ethics. You'll need the confidence to provide clear, independent advice, build credibility across the political spectrum and be comfortable operating where legal, commercial and public interest considerations meet.

We're interested in speaking with experienced local government lawyers who have already held Monitoring Officer responsibilities, or senior deputies looking to step into a broader leadership role.

The role would suit someone who enjoys working closely with senior stakeholders, values good governance and can balance sound judgement with a pragmatic approach to getting things done.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Advising members, committees and senior leadership teams
  • Leading governance, ethical standards and constitutional matters
  • Supporting effective and legally compliant decision-making
  • Managing member conduct and standards arrangements
  • Contributing to organisational strategy and corporate leadership
  • Building strong relationships across political and officer groups

This is an opportunity to play a visible and influential role within a large and diverse organisation at a time of significant change across local government.
