Role: Mainframe Systems Manager
Location: Manhattan, New York, NY – Hybrid
Work Arrangement: 4 Days Onsite / 1 Day Remote; must be available for 5 days onsite as needed
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Systems Manager to oversee the mainframe systems team and provide technical leadership in supporting IBM mainframe systems, program products, and subsystems.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing mainframe environments within a medium-to-large enterprise and will be responsible for team leadership, daily operations, system upgrades, modernization initiatives, and cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a team of Mainframe System Programmers, including workload distribution, scheduling, task delegation, performance management, and goal setting.
- Oversee daily mainframe operations, including system monitoring, incident response, change management, and project intake.
- Plan and coordinate upgrades for mainframe hardware, including mainframe processors, DASD, and VTS systems.
- Research, evaluate, and implement strategic technology solutions to modernize and optimize mainframe environments.
- Coordinate team resources to successfully complete technical projects and initiatives.
- Collaborate with managers, external agencies, technical support teams, data center operations, and other departments.
- Provide clear technical documentation and communicate complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Develop work plans, manage timelines, and provide accurate project and operational status updates.
- Support team members in adopting new technologies and resolving technical issues efficiently.
- Drive initiatives related to automation, performance tuning, workload optimization, and mainframe modernization.
- Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
- Ensure compliance with organizational technical policies, standards, and security requirements.
- Participate in after-hours, weekend, and 24/7 support activities when required.
Required / Preferred Technical Skills:
- 10+ years of experience managing mainframe environments in medium-to-large enterprise organizations.
- Strong expertise with IBM z/OS.
- Hands-on knowledge of:
- CICS
- DB2
- IMS
- DASD
- VTS
- Experience with enterprise monitoring tools such as OMEGAMON.
- Knowledge of SMF analytics and mainframe performance monitoring.
- Experience with mainframe security frameworks.
- Strong understanding of disaster recovery and business continuity for mainframe environments.
- Experience collaborating with storage, network, and data center operations teams.
- Experience driving mainframe modernization, automation, performance tuning, and workload optimization.

- Strong documentation and technical communication skills.
- Willingness to support critical systems outside normal business hours when required.
