Job Description

Obsolescence Management Engineer (Remote) - Outside IR35 Contract

Rate: £48-£53 per hour (Outside IR35)
Contract Length: 12 months
Location: Remote (UK-based)
Start Date: ASAP/Dependent on onboarding
Contract Type: Contract/Freelance

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Obsolescence Management Engineer to support a major defence engineering programme on a 12-month remote contract. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing obsolescence risks, investigating change queries, developing mitigation strategies, and producing technical solution documentation in line with project requirements and industry standards.

You will work closely with the Project Obsolescence Manager, Support Capabilities and Consumables (SCC), and wider engineering stakeholders to ensure timely resolution of obsolescence issues throughout the asset life cycle.

Key Responsibilities

Obsolescence Management Plan (OMP)

  • Operate in accordance with the project Obsolescence Management Plan (OMP).
  • Review, maintain, and update the OMP as required.
  • Ensure activities align with project plans, bids, schedules, and delivery milestones.

Change Query Investigation

  • Investigate obsolescence-related Change Query Issues (CQIs) as directed by the Project Obsolescence Manager.
  • Assess and prioritise obsolescence queries according to project KPIs.
  • Ensure timely submission of investigations.
  • Manage additional CQIs efficiently, prioritising urgent and high-impact requirements.

Risk Assessment & Mitigation

  • Evaluate obsolescence risks associated with Change Queries.
  • Develop and implement mitigation strategies in accordance with IEC 62402:2019 Obsolescence Management standards.
  • Provide technical recommendations to reduce life cycle and supportability risks.

Solution Documentation

  • Produce comprehensive solution documents containing appropriate technical evidence to support Change Query Final Answers (CQFA).
  • Ensure documentation meets SCC acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain quality standards, targeting less than 25% rejection of submitted solution documents.
  • Ensure solutions:
    • Meet the intent of AS-1111 requirements.
    • Are technically accurate, safe, and suitable for implementation.
    • Are presented clearly and professionally.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in obsolescence management within engineering or defence environments.
  • Experience managing Change Queries (CQ), technical investigations, and life cycle support issues.
  • Knowledge of IEC 62402:2019 Obsolescence Management principles.
  • Experience producing technical reports, solution papers, and engineering evidence documentation.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while managing competing priorities.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across engineering, support, and delivery teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Defence industry experience, particularly supporting MOD/DE&S programmes.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Supportability engineering processes.
    • Through-life capability management.
    • Engineering Change Management.
    • AS-1111 requirements.
  • Experience working within structured project governance environments.
