Atlassian Jira Software Engineer

Location: Dearborn, MI
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
Job Type: Contract / Mid-Term
Duration: 12–18 Months

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Atlassian Jira Software Engineer with strong hands-on experience designing, developing, configuring, customizing, and supporting Atlassian Jira and Confluence solutions.

The ideal candidate will combine Jira/Atlassian expertise with strong software development experience, particularly in Java, scripting, automation, APIs, integrations, and Agile software development. This role will work closely with engineering, product, architecture, and business teams to build scalable solutions that improve productivity, workflow efficiency, and user experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, configure, customize, test, deploy, and support Atlassian Jira and Confluence solutions.

  • Work with Jira Software, Jira Service Management (JSM), Jira Work Management, and Confluence.

  • Configure and customize Jira workflows, screens, fields, schemes, permissions, notifications, and automation.

  • Develop custom Jira scripts, workflows, integrations, and automations.

  • Develop and maintain backend applications, APIs, and microservices using Java and other server-side technologies.

  • Develop scripting and automation solutions using Groovy, Python, or similar technologies.

  • Build and maintain integrations between Jira/Confluence and enterprise applications.

  • Work with REST APIs, web services, and integration frameworks.

  • Integrate Atlassian products with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools.

  • Support Jira and Confluence data migration between environments while maintaining data integrity.

  • Configure and maintain Confluence spaces, permissions, templates, and knowledge bases.

  • Analyze business and technical requirements and recommend appropriate solutions.

  • Develop high-level architecture designs covering application components, interfaces, integrations, and deployment strategies.

  • Collaborate with product owners, architects, developers, designers, QA teams, and business stakeholders.

  • Develop and maintain software testing strategies and automated testing solutions.

  • Troubleshoot application, Jira, integration, and performance issues and perform root-cause analysis.

  • Optimize application and Atlassian platform performance.

  • Implement appropriate security controls for user data, including encryption and data protection practices.

  • Document technical designs, process flows, integrations, architecture decisions, and future-state solutions.

  • Explore and integrate AI/LLM capabilities with Jira, including ticket classification, summarization, recommendations, and conversational interfaces.

  • Support multiple concurrent projects and deliver solutions within established timelines and quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 4+ years of IT experience.

  • 3+ years of software development experience.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Jira/Atlassian products.

  • Strong experience with Jira configuration and customization.

  • Professional experience with Java.

  • Experience developing scripts using Groovy, Python, or similar scripting languages.

  • Experience with Jira automation and custom workflows.

  • Experience with REST APIs, integrations, and web services.

  • Experience with Confluence.

  • Understanding of software development lifecycle and Agile/Scrum methodologies.

  • Experience with source control, software testing, deployment, and CI/CD practices.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Jira Service Management (JSM).

  • Experience with Jira/Confluence administration and enterprise-scale customization.

  • Experience with Atlassian Marketplace apps and add-ons.

  • Experience with Jira-to-Jira or other Atlassian data migrations.

  • Experience integrating Jira with GitHub, GitLab, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or other CI/CD platforms.

  • Experience with Java-based backend applications and microservices.

  • Experience with Groovy ScriptRunner.

  • Experience with Jira REST APIs and custom integrations.

  • Experience with cloud-based Atlassian environments.

  • Knowledge of application security, authentication, authorization, and data protection.

  • Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into enterprise applications or Jira workflows.
