Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior UX Designer to shape the user experience of a Generative AI platform for a UK government department. This role focuses on making complex AI behaviour - retrieval, uncertainty, hallucination risk, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints - understandable and trustworthy for government users, while meeting GOV.UK Service Standard expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct user research with internal government users and stakeholders to understand tasks, pain points, and trust concerns around AI-assisted workflows
• Design end-to-end user journeys for RAG-based question-answering, agentic workflows, and human-in-the-loop review steps
• Ensure users understand what the AI is doing, where information comes from, and when human judgement is required
• Translate guardrails and human-in-the-loop checkpoints into clear, usable interface patterns (eg confidence indicators, source citations, escalation flows)
• Produce wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs (eg in Figma)
• Run usability testing sessions with real users and iterate designs based on findings and evaluation metrics
• Ensure all designs align with, and where necessary extend, the GOV.UK Design System
• Work closely with Product, UI Developers, and AI/Backend engineers to ensure designs are technically feasible and correctly implemented
• Align with engineering on evaluation-driven iteration
• Contribute UX rationale, research findings, and design decisions to "Docs-as-Code" artefacts supporting the OKUA knowledge-transfer framework

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end UX design for complex, data-heavy, or AI-powered products
• Experience conducting user research (interviews, usability testing, contextual inquiry) and synthesising findings into design decisions
• Experience designing for trust, transparency, and explainability in software presenting automated or AI-generated outputs
• Proficiency with design/prototyping tools (eg Figma)
• Practical experience working with or designing for the GOV.UK Design System
• Strong understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles (WCAG)
• Comfortable working within secure, regulated environments and handling sensitive data appropriately

Desirable

• Direct experience designing UX for LLM/RAG-based products or other AI-assisted decision-making tools
• Experience delivering digital services within UK central government or the wider public sector, including service assessments
• Familiarity with GOV.UK Service Standard expectations
• Experience designing human-in-the-loop or escalation workflows in regulated environments
• Exposure to open-source design systems or communities

Scope & Accountability

• Responsible for the end-to-end design and craft of the platform's user experience
• Owns the quality, consistency, and usability of design outputs
• An execution and craft role for AI guardrails and human-in-the-loop patterns, not a policy-setting one
• Accountable for timely delivery of design iterations aligned to research findings and roadmap priorities
