A well-established independent power generation organization is seeking a senior-level Instrumentation & Controls Technician to join the maintenance team at a large dual-fuel generating facility in Southern Maryland.

This is a hands-on controls-focused position for someone who can take ownership of the plant's DCS and turbine control systems while also performing field instrumentation and electrical work. The strongest candidates will have substantial experience with Emerson Ovation and/or GE turbine controls, along with the ability to troubleshoot logic, interpret drawings, and diagnose complex plant issues.

This is not a desk-based Controls Engineer role. The successful candidate will spend significant time in the field troubleshooting, calibrating, testing, repairing, and maintaining plant equipment.

The primary need is true controls expertise. The facility has seen plenty of candidates with general electrical or I&E backgrounds, but this position requires someone whose strongest technical skill set is DCS, controls, and turbine control systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair plant instrumentation, control systems, and electrical equipment.
• Take ownership of DCS and turbine control system troubleshooting and support.
• Troubleshoot Emerson Ovation, GE Mark VI/Mark VIe, PLCs, and related control systems.
• Work with ladder logic, control logic, system configuration, and programming.
• Interpret and work from schematics, one-line diagrams, P&IDs, function logic diagrams, and electrical/control drawings.
• Perform instrumentation calibration and electrical testing, including transmitters, valves, insulation resistance, batteries, analyzers, and related equipment.
• Troubleshoot and maintain instrumentation associated with turbines, generators, boilers, motors, pumps, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, relays, and other generating-station equipment.
• Maintain and troubleshoot medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, UPS systems, and power cables.
• Perform repairs and upgrades involving transmitters, motors, switches, sensors, wiring, conduit, and associated control equipment.
• Execute preventative maintenance and daily work orders through a CMMS/EAM system.
• Prepare maintenance and testing documentation and reports.
• Support vendors, contractors, engineering personnel, and plant management as needed.
• Provide technical support during planned and emergency plant outages.
• Assist with troubleshooting and development of less-experienced I&C technicians.
• Operate lifts, forklifts, and other equipment required to perform maintenance activities.

Team Environment

The I&C group is a small team within a broader plant maintenance organization. This position will be one of three I&C/I&E professionals, working alongside mechanical maintenance personnel and a maintenance supervisor.

Because of the size of the team, this person needs to be comfortable working independently, making technical decisions, and taking ownership of problems without needing constant direction.

Required Qualifications

• 4+ years of Instrumentation, Controls, and Electrical experience, preferably in power generation, utilities, marine propulsion, or a similarly complex industrial environment.
• Strong hands-on DCS/controls troubleshooting experience.
• Experience with Emerson Ovation and/or GE control systems strongly preferred.
• GE Mark VI/Mark VIe experience highly desirable.
• Ability to troubleshoot control logic and work with ladder logic/programming.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, schematics, one-line diagrams, and control logic drawings.
• Strong instrumentation calibration and electrical troubleshooting capabilities.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of electrical safety practices, PPE, NFPA 70, and applicable utility/industrial standards.
• Valid driver's license.

Physical / Work Environment

The position requires the ability to:

• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Work at significant heights, including elevations of approximately 120 feet.
• Work in confined spaces and around rotating machinery.
• Work around high-voltage electrical equipment.
• Lift, push, pull, and carry tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Stand, walk, kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods.
• Work overtime and participate in plant outage activities and on-call response.

Schedule & Outage Requirements

The normal schedule is Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, with overtime as needed.

The position also participates in plant on-call responsibilities and requires significant flexibility during planned outages. Planned outages may require extended workdays and working more than 14 consecutive days during major outage periods occurring approximately twice per year.

Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates relocating to the area.
