Data Governance Manager

500 - 540 per day inside IR35
Our client, is seeking a skilled Data Governance Manager to join their team for an initial three-month engagement. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to shaping and enhancing data governance practices within a dynamic environment.
What you'll be doing:
- Identify critical and sensitive datasets.
- Assess current governance maturity and risks.
- Review existing access controls and ownership arrangements.
- Define data ownership, stewardship and accountability models.
- Recommend a prioritised governance improvement roadmap.
What you'll bring:
- Experience identifying and assessing critical organisational datasets, understanding their business value, usage and associated risks.
- Ability to map and classify sensitive, regulated and business-critical data, supporting appropriate controls, access arrangements and compliance requirements.
- Experience reviewing existing data governance policies, procedures and controls, identifying gaps, inconsistencies and opportunities for improvement.
- Demonstrable experience assessing data ownership, stewardship and accountability arrangements, including identifying areas where ownership is unclear or absent.
- Strong understanding of data access management principles, including reviewing and improving approaches to granting, managing and monitoring data access.
- Experience analysing organisational structures and processes to identify governance, accountability and decision-making gaps relating to data.
- Ability to define and document data ownership, stewardship and accountability frameworks, working with business and technical stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of data governance operating models, including the relationship between data owners, product owners, technical teams and governance forums.
- Experience conducting governance maturity assessments and producing recommendations to improve governance capability and effectiveness.
- Ability to develop clear and practical governance artefacts, including ownership models, policies, standards, procedures and RACI frameworks.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with experience facilitating discussions to establish consensus on ownership, accountability and governance responsibilities.
- Understanding of how data governance supports broader data capabilities, including data architecture, data engineering, reporting, analytics and AI initiatives.
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory and compliance requirements, including GDPR, information management and data protection principles.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience supporting the introduction of metadata management, data cataloguing or data classification approaches.
- Experience working within cross-functional data teams, collaborating with data architects, engineers, platform teams and business stakeholders.
- Understanding of data quality management frameworks and the roles and responsibilities required to support them.
- Experience working in Agile or product-based delivery environments.
