Java Architect - Enterprise Application Architecture

Location Bethesda, MD (Hybrid)

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Java Architect to join our client's team in a hybrid capacity based out

of Bethesda, MD. This role requires deep, hands-on technical expertise in Java-based enterprise application

design and development, along with the ability to define architecture standards, guide engineering teams,

and make high-impact technical decisions. The ideal candidate is a strong individual contributor as well as a

technical leader, comfortable owning architecture end-to-end - from design through implementation,

performance, and scalability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end architecture and technical design of complex, enterprise-scale Java applications.
  • Define and enforce architecture standards, design patterns, coding best practices, and technical
  • guidelines.
  • Lead the design of microservices, APIs, and integration patterns across distributed systems.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, including code reviews, proof-of-concepts, and complex
  • problem-solving.
  • Evaluate and recommend technology stacks, frameworks, and tools aligned with business and
  • performance needs.
  • Partner with product owners, engineering leads, and DevOps teams to translate business
  • requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Drive performance tuning, scalability, security, and reliability across applications and systems.
  • Mentor and guide development teams on architecture decisions, coding standards, and technical
  • growth.
  • Own technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design specifications, and decision
  • records.
  • Support CI/CD pipeline design and cloud deployment strategy in collaboration with DevOps.

Required / Mandatory Skills

  • Very strong, hands-on technical expertise in Core Java, J2EE, and object-oriented design principles.
  • Deep experience with the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Cloud, Spring
  • Security).
  • Proven experience architecting microservices-based and distributed systems at enterprise scale.
  • Strong experience with RESTful API design, integration patterns, and messaging systems (e.g.,
  • Kafka, JMS, RabbitMQ).
  • Solid understanding of relational and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and query performance
  • optimization.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms
  • (AWS/Azure/Google Cloud Platform).
  • Strong grasp of application security, performance tuning, caching strategies, and scalability best
  • practices.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools and DevOps practices (Jenkins, Git, Maven/Gradle).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to lead technical discussions and make sound
  • architectural trade-offs.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical
  • and non-technical stakeholders.
