Quick overview
Job description
Are you ready to be a big part of something big?
At carsales, we’re all about making buying and selling a great experience. Since 1997, we’ve been evolving with the new economy to help people choose how they move today and tomorrow.
When it comes to your career, we want to offer meaningful opportunities that empower you to make a lasting impact. But for that to happen, we strive to feel small - small enough to stay agile, learn across teams, and connect authentically with each other.
With a vision to be the global leader in online vehicle marketplaces, we’re transforming how people buy and sell across the world. We discover new ideas and bring them to life. We continue to grow, and we continue to evolve- and we’re not afraid to take bold steps to get there.
A career in Core Services at carsales means working on the critical backend platforms and services that connect our Consumer and Dealer segments, enabling key customer and commercial journeys across the carsales ecosystem. The team owns and evolves a range of business-critical services responsible for areas such as listing and inventory flows, payments, data exchange, and integrations between platforms. Given the breadth and criticality of these assets, the role requires strong technical capability alongside significant collaboration across multiple engineering teams, product areas, and business domains. Core Services plays a key role in ensuring these connections remain scalable, resilient, and reliable while enabling teams across carsales to deliver new capabilities and customer experiences.
We embrace hybrid working combining the flexibility of remote work with the energy and connection of in-person collaboration. We champion flexibility and offer a range of policies and leave options to support your wellbeing.
What’s on offer:
- A place where you can move your career forward, where you’ll be continuously backed to make new ideas happen, and the chance to do work that makes real, significant impact in the world.
- We’re proud to be recognised as one of Australia’s Best Workplaces™ by Great Place to Work®, a Family Friendly Workplace, a WORK180 endorsed employer for women.
- The support of a highly engaged, high-performing team including a leadership team that’s you’ll actually have face time with.
- 24 weeks paid parental leave for primary caregivers, four weeks paid secondary caregivers leave, six weeks paid gender transition leave
What you’ll be doing
- Use your expertise in modern agile practices to plan, build and support great software that delivers quality at scale, automating wherever possible
- Work with the team to drive the technical implementation of complex projects
- Own the whole lifecycle of our services: write and ship them to production, run them, and act as first responder when they break
- Shape requirements with product managers, looking beyond what's on the card to find the real business value
- Be involved in all aspects of software engineering practice, including breaking down work, code review, testing, source control and build processes
- Mentor and coach a team of engineers, giving constructive feedback and keeping standards and best practices high so the whole team's output lifts
- Build mutual respect and trust with product managers, engineers, researchers and designers, and help shape team culture by sharing your knowledge and ideas
In your first 6 to 12 months, you’ll
- Evolve the listing and inventory flows that connect our Consumer and Dealer marketplaces, keeping them scalable and reliable
- Strengthen the supporting services behind key customer and commercial journeys, and own them in production
- Lift the resilience of our data exchange services, working across multiple engineering and product teams
What we’re looking for
- Strong C#/.NET back-end engineering: Core Services is about 95% back end
- Cloud build-and-run experience: you've shipped to the cloud and operated what you built, including being first responder when it broke, ideally on AWS
- End-to-end ownership: you work across the whole software development lifecycle, shape requirements and find the business value, not just what's on the card
- Adaptable fast learner: a varied background that shows you pick up new technology and adapt to changing needs
- Solid SQL and data storage skills across relational and non-relational databases (e.g. Postgres, DynamoDB)
- A passion for continuous improvement and best practice in engineering - Inclusive, interpersonal attributes that connect to our behaviours: Customer Obsessed, Curious and Connected
Nice to have
- Web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript) and a front-end framework such as React, Angular, Vue or Svelte
- Machine Learning or AI experience, whether building systems that use AI or using AI day to day
- Event-based systems using queues (RabbitMQ, SNS+SQS, PubSub)
We know not everyone will meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.
A few other things we want you to know...
- As an equal opportunity employer, carsales welcomes applications from individuals of all backgrounds, identities, abilities, and life experiences. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported.
- If you have a disability or require adjustments to participate fully in the recruitment process, please let us know - we’re here to support you.
- We understand the importance of work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements, including part-time options. If you’d like to explore this, just ask during the process.
- We’re also a proud Circle Back Initiative employer, which means we commit to responding to every applicant.
- Successful candidates joining the carsales team will need to complete a National Police Record check and must have full-time Australian working rights.
So come and join our team - because every role is a big role in our plans to go big.
