We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer - AI/ML Platforms to join a cutting-edge AI/ML engineering team developing scalable applications and platforms at the intersection of cloud, data, and artificial intelligence.

This is an opportunity to work on innovative AI-powered products, helping to design, build, and deploy modern cloud-native applications while collaborating closely with software engineers, data engineers, and machine learning specialists.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain Python-based Back End applications and services
• Build and deploy cloud-native infrastructure and application environments
• Integrate AI/ML components with Front End applications, data pipelines, and compute platforms
• Deliver high-quality, maintainable software using modern engineering best practices
• Develop automated testing frameworks and comprehensive technical documentation
• Monitor application and service performance, identifying opportunities for optimisation and improvement
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards across the team
• Collaborate with engineers and technical stakeholders to build end-to-end solutions that consume and deliver data products
• Support continuous delivery and DevOps practices to ensure reliable releases

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong commercial experience developing Back End applications in Python
• Experience developing APIs and web services, ideally using FastAPI
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, ideally Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Cloud Run
• Strong understanding of Infrastructure as Code using Terraform
• Experience writing automated tests using tools such as Pytest
• Knowledge of Agile software development methodologies
• Strong experience with Git, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software engineering practices
• A collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills

Desirable Experience

• Experience deploying and supporting AI/ML-powered applications
• Knowledge of LLMs, NLP, agent-based systems, or Generative AI solutions
• Experience working with Docker and containerised environments
• Exposure to Front End technologies such as React or Vue
• Experience working with scientific, biological, or large-scale data environments
• Previous experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, or leading engineering workstreams
  
• Strong understanding of production support, monitoring, and engineering best practices
