Location: Onsite – Redmond, WA | Burlingame, CA

Duration: 12 Months (Extendable)

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Linguist II to support advanced speech and language technology initiatives. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in phonetics, phonology, transcription evaluation, data strategy, and multilingual linguistic analysis. This role will contribute to improving speech recognition, text normalization, and large language model (LLM) data quality across multiple projects.

The position requires collaboration with cross-functional engineering, data, and product teams to design experiments, evaluate transcription quality, and optimize linguistic data pipelines.

Key Responsibilities

·         Provide linguistic expertise in phonetics, phonology, lexicography, dialectology, sociolinguistics, and NLP.

·         Design and conduct experiments for evaluating transcription quality and data accuracy.

·         Develop manual and automated processes for multiple concurrent projects.

·         Ensure high-quality label alignments, prosodic classification, POS identification, and disambiguation.

·         Create and refine text normalization and inverse text normalization processes.

·         Manage lexical and phrasal transcriptions and related metadata.

·         Analyze system metrics such as user feedback, transcription coverage, and POS tagger performance.

·         Support data strategy initiatives for speech and language model improvements.

·         Perform audio-to-text transcription evaluation and data assessment activities.

·         Collaborate with engineering teams on LLM-related data processing tasks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

·         Strong knowledge of phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, dialectology, and other areas of linguistics.

·         Experience with transcription and annotation systems such as SAMPA, IPA, and ToBI.

·         Native or near-native proficiency in at least two languages, with English required.

·         Knowledge of prescriptive writing and punctuation conventions for at least one language.

·         Ability to analyze waveforms and spectrograms.

·         Experience with Python and SQL for data querying and analysis.

·         Experience working with LLMs (Large Language Models) and linguistic data processing.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education / Experience

·         Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Language Technologies, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, or a related field.

·         Master’s degree highly preferred.

·         Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of experience in phonetics, phonology, and related linguistic disciplines.
