Job Description

MEMS Design Engineer

Location: Manchester, UK
Job Type: Full-Time | On-Site

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented MEMS Design Engineer to join a growing deep-tech organisation developing next-generation MEMS-based sensing technology.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will play a key role in the design and development of innovative MEMS devices, taking concepts from simulation and modelling through to fabrication, testing and validation. This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology at the intersection of MEMS, photonics, optics and semiconductor manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop MEMS devices for advanced sensing applications.
  • Create device concepts, simulations, layouts and fabrication-ready designs.
  • Perform multiphysics modelling and simulation, including mechanical, thermal, electrostatic and optical analysis.
  • Develop and optimise MEMS structures such as actuators, suspension systems, mirrors and interferometers.
  • Create mask layouts and support design release activities.
  • Collaborate with fabrication teams and external manufacturing partners.
  • Analyse test data and correlate experimental results with simulations.
  • Investigate performance limitations and drive continuous design improvements.
  • Support system integration activities alongside optics, electronics and manufacturing teams.
  • Contribute to intellectual property development and future technology roadmaps.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree or PhD in MEMS Engineering, Microsystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing MEMS devices through industrial development or academic research.
  • Strong understanding of MEMS physics and semiconductor fabrication processes.
  • Experience using MEMS simulation and modelling tools.
  • Proficiency with COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB and L-Edit (or similar layout tools).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
