Job Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Data Center Asset Inventory Consultant to perform a comprehensive physical inventory of data center equipment across an enterprise environment. This is a hands-on, onsite role requiring close collaboration with IT, facilities, and application stakeholders. The consultant will assess approximately 500 data center devices and produce a consolidated, accurate infrastructure inventory with actionable findings.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed physical inventory of ~500 data center devices including servers, storage, and network equipment
- Validate manufacturer, model, serial number, asset/CI ID, rack location, device role, hardware configuration, and operational status
- Assess server, storage, and network infrastructure including physical and virtual environments
- Reconcile physical inventory against existing CMDB, asset databases, and spreadsheets
- Identify duplicate, missing, unidentified, or inaccurate asset records
- Capture OS, firmware, configuration, and lifecycle information
- Flag equipment approaching End-of-Life (EOL) or End-of-Support (EOS)
- Document inventory gaps, inconsistencies, and data-quality issues
- Collaborate with customer stakeholders to validate findings
- Prepare and support presentation of the final assessment report
Required Skills
- Hands-on knowledge of x86/enterprise servers, storage systems (SAN/NAS), and network switches/routers
- Data center rack infrastructure expertise
- Experience with physical data center inventory and asset discovery
- Proficiency with CMDB, ITAM, or infrastructure inventory tools
- Strong Excel/data reconciliation and reporting skills
- Understanding of hardware lifecycle, EOL/EOS, and support status
- Excellent documentation and communication skills
- Ability to work independently onsite and interact professionally with infrastructure teams
Preferred Skills
- ServiceNow CMDB/ITAM, Device42, Lansweeper, or SolarWinds experience
- Familiarity with VMware/virtualization environments
- Knowledge of enterprise storage: Dell EMC, NetApp, HPE, Pure Storage
- Knowledge of enterprise networking: Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Palo Alto
- Experience with data center migration, consolidation, or transformation assessments
- ITIL/CMDB/IT Asset Management certification or experience
Location & Work Model
San Jose, CA — Fully Onsite (5 days/week). Candidates must be available to work on-site at customer data centers.
Engagement Details
2-month contract engagement with strong potential for extension based on project needs.
