Job Description

Chemistry Academic Lab Technician
Schedule: 40 hours per week
Assignment Type: Temporary, as needed

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly organized and safety-conscious Chemistry Academic Lab Technician to support the daily operations of instructional chemistry laboratories. This role is responsible for preparing laboratory materials, maintaining equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and providing operational support to faculty and students. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a laboratory environment and a strong understanding of chemical handling, laboratory preparation, and inventory management.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare chemistry laboratories for instructional use, including setup and breakdown of experiments before and after scheduled classes.
  • Prepare chemical solutions, reagents, standards, and other laboratory materials required for coursework and demonstrations.
  • Maintain, calibrate, clean, and inspect laboratory equipment to ensure proper operation and compliance with safety standards.
  • Assist faculty with laboratory demonstrations, instructional activities, and special projects.
  • Support students and faculty by providing guidance on laboratory procedures, equipment usage, and safe laboratory practices.
  • Monitor laboratory spaces to promote adherence to chemical safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage inventory of chemicals, glassware, laboratory supplies, and equipment; coordinate restocking and purchasing needs.
  • Properly label, store, and dispose of chemicals in accordance with established safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Maintain organized preparation areas, chemical storage rooms, and laboratory workspaces.
  • Utilize computer software to maintain inventory records, safety documentation, equipment logs, and laboratory reports.
  • Assist with forecasting laboratory supply needs and monitoring departmental material usage.
  • Provide support and direction to student workers or other assigned support personnel.
  • Perform additional duties necessary to support efficient laboratory operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working in a chemistry, scientific, educational, or technical laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of laboratory support experience.
  • Experience supporting academic or instructional chemistry laboratories.
  • Knowledge of chemical preparation, laboratory instrumentation, hazardous material handling, and laboratory safety procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of chemistry laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety practices.
  • Ability to accurately prepare chemical solutions, reagents, and laboratory materials according to established protocols.
  • Familiarity with laboratory instruments such as balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, hot plates, and other instructional laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and computer-based inventory or recordkeeping systems.
  • Strong organizational, inventory management, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to interpret and follow laboratory procedures, safety data sheets (SDS), and written instructions.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and the public.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe, compliant, and organized laboratory environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining accuracy.
