Description

We are looking for a highly motivated and self-driven software developer to join our Data Ingestion Automation team. A new member of the team will have the opportunity to work with some of the largest education datasets in the world gathered through Pearson's online learning products.

The core mission of the Data Ingestion Automation team is to enable and automate the ingestion of data to improve Pearson products, learning content, and learner experience. The position provides the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge development and to make a substantial contribution to learning and instruction. This position will have the opportunity to pioneer the adoption of AI to enable more rapid data capture utilizing both AWS and Google Cloud Platform hyperscalers.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs and implements new, unit tested software.

  • Maintains and enhances existing software.

  • Actively participates in customer, requirements, architecture, and design meetings.

  • Enjoys a healthy technical debate but knows how to collaboratively solve problems that move everyone forward.

  • Uses logical analysis, theoretical deduction, and sound reasoning to troubleshoot challenging technical and business problems.

  • Contributes to the continuous integration pipeline deploying into both AWS and Google Cloud Platform environments utilizing Terraform.

  • Works efficiently and collaboratively in an Agile (Scrum or Kanban) team environment.

  • Follows DevOps practices: owning software application(s) and code from development through deployment.

  • Works with Big Data technologies (Kinesis, SQS, BigQuery) that deal with large-scale distributed data processing.

Qualifications:

  • Detail-oriented, self-directed, and self-motivated with a strong capacity for working successfully and flexibly with members across the organization.

  • Willingness and ability to quickly learn complex information systems.

  • Stays current on industry trends and formulates an opinion on the pros and cons of each.

  • Experienced with software performance, observability, scalability, maintainability, reusability and security.

  • A good foundation in computer science with strong competencies in basic data structures, JVM concurrency, thread safety, and OO design for solving day-to-day problems.

  • Ability to independently learn and actively seek new skills and knowledge to advance the development capabilities of the organization.

  • Ability to effectively use AI-assisted tools to accelerate day-to-day development, automation, troubleshooting, and data engineering activities while maintaining accuracy, quality, and responsible usage standards.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical people, and work with a variety of internal and external development groups.

  • Willingness to pivot technologies, solutions, and projects as the mission dictates.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science / MIS or equivalent experience

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in software engineering and design

Required

  • A "can-do" attitude

  • Willingness to learn new technologies

  • Experience with Java and Python

  • Experience with REST-based web services

  • Experience with Maven or similar build tool

  • Experience with unit testing and mock frameworks

  • AWS and/or Google Cloud Platform experience

  • Practice with Git or similar source control system

  • Strong foundation in Linux

Preferred (Nice to have)

  • AWS Cloud experience in Kinesis, Aurora, SQS, EC2, ECS, and/or Lambda

  • Google Cloud Platform Cloud experience in BigQuery, Airflow, GKS, Cloud Run

  • Database Design experience (SQL or NoSQL)

  • Experience with high volume systems

  • Understanding of best practices in security (SSL, TLS, SSH, Public Key Encryption, etc.)

  • Understanding of TCP/IP based computer networking

  • Spring Boot

  • Spring GraphQL

Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York State, New York City, Vermont, Washington State, and Washington DC laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:

The minimum full-time salary range is between $80,000 - $90,000.
