Job Description

We are seeking an Autism and Developmental Disability Monitoring (ADDM) Abstractor to join the Maternal and Child Health Division at the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). This role is responsible for daily medical and educational chart abstractions on children reported with or suspected of autism to comply with CDC ADDM Network surveillance standards.

  • Location: Indianapolis, IN 46205 (Must reside in Indiana)
  • Work Arrangement: Hybrid / Primarily Remote (Requires 3-day onsite orientation in Indianapolis + up to 10% travel for CDC meetings)
  • Role Type: Contract (September 2026 – December 2027, extension likely based on CDC funding)
  • Interview: Webcam Only

Key Responsibilities

  • Chart Abstraction: Review, abstract, and code complex medical and educational records using REDCap, EMRs, and electronic education systems for children reported to the ADDM Network.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Update and maintain hospital contact lists to request remote medical record access; serve as an educational resource to health care providers, birthing facilities, and the public.
  • Public Health Collaboration: Partner with Data and Surveillance teams, Public Health Genetics programs, and CDC partners on initiatives, funding opportunities, and educational materials.
  • Program Maintenance: Triage public inquiries, maintain standard internal operating documents, and assist in broader agency projects regarding developmental disabilities.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Genetics, Nursing, Early Childhood Education/Development, Special Education, or a closely related field.
  • Clinical Data Abstraction: 2+ years of experience in clinical or medical chart abstraction.
  • Health Informatics & Databases: 2+ years of experience with database systems and web-based tools, including REDCap, Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and Electronic Education Records.
  • Confidentiality & Governance: Demonstrated experience handling sensitive health information, maintaining HIPAA compliance, and working under strict data privacy protocols.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-departmental and inter-agency collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in or substantial knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, or special education models.
  • Experience communicating directly with hospital administrative staff, clinical teams, and physicians.
