Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Software Architect to lead the architecture and design of advanced autonomy systems for underground loaders (LHD machines) within our Command for Underground Loading team. This role is pivotal in shaping the software landscape for machine controls, robotics, and semi realtime embedded applications, ensuring alignment with our product roadmap, One Autonomy strategy, and the latest industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ability to understand customer requirements to ensure alignment with project objectives, technical feasibility and company's technology visions.
  • Design and produce scalable, maintainable, and high quality software architecture for machine control and robotic systems, with a focus on semi real time embedded applications.
  • Translate system level requirements and solutions into robust software architectures and detailed software requirements.
  • Drive and oversee all aspects of software architecture, including architectural design, reviews, documentation, and continuous process improvements across distributed delivery teams in Australia and India.
  • Act as the gatekeeper for software quality, enforcing best practices, code reuse, and architectural consistency across multiple product lines and solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with system architects, product managers, and multi disciplinary engineering teams to deliver cohesive and future proof solutions.
  • Lead trade off analyses, prepare Architecture Decision Records (ADR), ensure architectural decisions balance functional and non functional requirements (e.g., scalability, reliability, performance, and safety), drive and lead the improvements.
  • Working knowledge of "Always releasable" software, CI/CD pipelines, and SAFe framework.
  • Mentor and guide software developers, promoting knowledge sharing, best practices (e.g., OOP, design patterns), and servant leadership within the team.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technological advancements and market trends in machine control, robotics, real time and embedded systems, and integrate relevant innovations into the architecture.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, flexibility, and continuous improvement, while maintaining discipline in architectural decisions and processes.
Essential Skills
  • Proven experience architecting and delivering large scale software solutions for machine control, sensor fusions, automation, or robotics (preferably in mining, heavy equipment, or industrial automation domains).
  • Familiarity with machine learning, sensor fusion, computer vision, and modern control algorithms as applied to autonomous or semi autonomous systems.
  • Expertise in designing real time and semi realtime embedded systems (C/C++ or other relevant languages) and integrating safety critical software standards.
  • Strong understanding of modern software architecture patterns (e.g., microservices, component based, layered architectures) and software development methodologies (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD).
  • Hands on experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet/IP, Modbus), and hardware/software co design.
  • Strong problem solving skills with a system level mindset, capable of making sound trade off decisions under constraints.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, able to engage with cross functional teams and present complex ideas clearly.
  • Experience with distributed, multi site development environments and working with diverse, global teams.
  • Desirable: Experience with cloud connected edge devices, cybersecurity for embedded systems, and compliance with industry specific standards.
Qualifications & Attributes
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years' experience in software architecture and development for embedded, robotic, or machine control systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and servant leadership capabilities.
  • Visionary, creative, and able to work effectively at both abstract and detailed levels.
  • Flexible, open minded, and decisive, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
