Senior Certificate Lifecycle Management/PKI Automation Engineer
Location: New Albany, Ohio (Hybrid)
Role Overview
An experienced security systems PKI engineer is required to drive the design and implementation of an enterprise-grade certificate lifecycle management program. This position focuses on establishing repeatable, secure automation for certificate discovery, renewal, and distribution across a complex, heterogeneous technology environment. The successful candidate must demonstrate hands-on expertise in last-mile certificate deployment, ensuring seamless installation, service activation, and validation on the endpoints actually terminating secure traffic.
Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate on the architecture, configuration, testing, and implementation of PKI Certificate Lifecycle Management (CLM) and Gateway components.
• Analyze enterprise deployment patterns to identify where secure traffic terminates and establish standardized certificate delivery workflows.
• Automate the delivery and installation of certificates, private keys, and intermediate chains to target destinations using APIs, push commands, and configuration management tools.
• Design and execute safe service-reload patterns to activate updated certificates while maintaining continuous application availability.
• Validate successful certificate replacement, verifying chain integrity and proper secure socket negotiation post-deployment.
• Establish robust rollback mechanisms and automated failure-handling procedures to mitigate operational risk during rotation cycles.
• Conduct network endpoint investigations to map certificate dependencies and identify target termination technologies.
• Drive technical discussions and collaborate closely with internal infrastructure and application teams to foster adoption of automation practices.

Required Qualifications
Education: A bachelor's degree in computer science, information security, or a related engineering field is preferred.
Experience: Seven to ten years of systems engineering experience is required, including at least five years dedicated to public key infrastructure, certificate authority integrations, and certificate lifecycle management platforms.
Technical Skills: 7+ years of infrastructure/security engineering experience, 5+ years working with PKI, certificates, TLS, or certificate management platform Strong proficiency in F5 BIG-IP certificate rotation and secure profile management is required. Practical experience with automation tooling, APIs, infrastructure-as-code concepts, and scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Shell is required. Solid understanding of web and application server infrastructure, including Microsoft IIS, NGINX, Apache, and container platforms like Kubernetes, is required. Comprehensive knowledge of X.509 certificate formats, certificate chains, trust stores, and handshake analysis is required.
Preferred Qualifications

• Direct production experience implementing automated PKI Certificate Lifecycle Management and Gateway configurations.
• Proven track record of migrating enterprise organizations from manual processes to automated certificate lifecycle management.
• Familiarity with retail or consumer services technology environments experiencing rapid rotation cycles.
