Veterinary Internship - Surgery

Vets Now Referrals Glasgow is a busy private referral hospital and first-opinion out-of-hours emergency provider located in the heart of Glasgow. Our multidisciplinary referral team collaborates closely across Surgery, Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, and Oncology, supported by a highly skilled nursing team. 

Role Overview 

We are seeking an enthusiastic applicant for our Surgery Discipline-Specific Internship starting on 05th April 2027. 

This 12-month training position offers: 

*A structured internship with exposure to both soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. 

*Close supervision and mentorship from experienced surgical clinicians. 

*Hands-on involvement in a wide range of emergency and referral surgical cases, with opportunities to develop primary case responsibility. 

*Opportunities to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines to enhance surgical case management. 

*This internship is ideal for candidates wishing to develop their surgical skills and knowledge, pursue further postgraduate training or a residency, or strengthen their experience in small animal referral surgery. 

Key Responsibilities 

As a Surgery DSI Intern, you will: 

*Participate in the planning, diagnosis, and treatment of surgical cases. 

*Work closely with senior clinicians, residents, and the nursing team in the management of patients. 

*Consider animal welfare and ethical principles when planning and undertaking interventions. 

*Maintain high clinical standards and accurate medical records. 

*Contribute to seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, and local teaching opportunities. 

*Engage in clinical research projects and independent study. 

*Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative working environment. 

Requirements 

To be eligible, you must have: 

*A recognised veterinary degree. 

*Registration or eligibility for registration with the RCVS. 

*Eligibility to work in the UK and the required visa documentation. 

*Successfully completed a small animal rotating internship in a multidisciplinary referral hospital. 

Strong communication and English language skills. 

A genuine interest in small animal surgery, including both soft tissue and orthopaedic disciplines. 

High clinical standards, attention to detail, and professional integrity. 

A proactive and collaborative attitude, with a commitment to patient and client care. 

The ability to prioritise effectively and remain calm in challenging situations. 

A commitment to upholding and aligning with the Vets Now values.

About the Surgery Service 

Our Surgery service provides multidisciplinary referral care across soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, with close collaboration between surgical clinicians and colleagues in Emergency and Critical Care, Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine, and Oncology. 

The internship provides excellent exposure to a broad range of emergency and elective surgical cases within a busy referral hospital, supported by experienced clinicians and a highly skilled nursing team.
